What is a Writing Prompt and Why Would I Use One?

The Just Write blog has a large supply of writing prompts designed to direct, inspire, or contribute to the creation of a piece of writing. Click on the tag "Prompts" in the list below.

The idea is to take the prompt, which might be anything from a sentence fragment to a photo, and run with it in a piece of writing.

For a timed exercise, pick a prompt for inspiration and write for ten to fifteen minutes without stopping. Resist the urge to edit. Don't judge or question the direction your writing goes.

Most people use writing prompts as a warm-up or creative exercise. The idea is to allow your creativity or insight to flow unobstructed onto the page.
